Failure to create trust relationship with virtual machines running VMWare

By SuperUser Account on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 10:55 AM

This article describes a general problem with VMWare when setting up a cross forest trust relationship.

This problem and a suggested workaround are well documented by Jorge de Almeida Pinto on his blog, so there is little point reproducing it here.

The link to the blog is:http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/archive/2005/12/18/297.aspx

At the time Jorge posted his blog, I had just experienced the same issue, which meant that it wasn't an isolated incident. Since then Jorge and I have been working to try and find more detail. So far we have come up with the following information.

  • The issue occurs on at least the following VMWare versions: Workstation 4.0, 5.0 and 5.5, ESX Server 2.1.0.
  • The same problem does not occur when running Microsoft's Virtual PC or Server, which means it is not a general virtualisation issue.
  • The issue does not occur before Windows Server 2003 SP1

If you have further information on this problem then please post to the ActiveDir mailing list, or post a comment here.
