The following error is regularly appearing on one of our W2K3 SP1 DC's:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NTDS ISAM
Event Category: General
Event ID: 604
Date: 05/03/2007
Time: 12:37:04
User: N/A
Computer: LDN-DC4
Description:
NTDS (888) NTDSA: Locale ID 0x00000404 (Chinese (Taiwan) Chinese) is either
invalid or not installed on this machine.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The above language is not installed on the DC, as it’s not required.

Any ideas what could be causing this? I’ve heard of this happening on
Exchange servers, where an OWA client has the language installed but the
Exchange server doesn’t. By this logic, I thought it may be caused by an
“out of site” PC being authenticated by this DC, but it doesn’t seem to be
the case. By the same token, I suppose it could be that an in-site PC has
the language pack installed, and that the error is being logged when the
client is authenticated? Don't see why this error would be logged just
because of authentication though.

I also thought it may be somehow caused by a replication partner in the Asia
Pacific region (the DC logging the error is part of an IP site link that
includes a connection to an AD site in Asia), however the timestamps for the
error aren’t consistent with the replication interval.

The DC logging the error is a GC, and is hosting a read-only partition of
the domain partition from AP - is there any possibility there is some info
the DC is trying to report in the event log regarding a string that it can't
interpret (say for an object in the AP partition)?

I suppose I can get rid of the errors by installing the support for East
Asian languages, but I’d rather know why the error is being logged. I’d also
rather avoid the 230mb of associated installation files!

Thanks,
MD
