Running a 2003 domain. I was just wondering how many out there have run the dst command file with the reg key and vbs script provided my Microsoft to update their environments? I was able to successfully use a gpo to update my 2000 servers at my old company, but at my new one we were unable to push it out to our XP, sp2 machines.

I used it since we have quite a few 2000 servers in our
environment, and it worked perfectly in addition to also updating Windows 2003
and XP machines.

It’s not necessary on XP/win 2003 machines.

How did you do it? Exactly like MS stated? You
created the cmd file with the reg file and vbs script and put it in your \\domain\netlogon share?
The only change I made was I put the cmd file in the policy
folder I created and left the path in the cmd file pointing to my netlogon
share. It worked. But it won't work here? From: ActiveDir-owner@mail.activedir.org

I know. They do not have wsus or any patching

I didnt use it on any XP systems, only used the KB914387 on
Win2k only, which is what it was meant for. We used our existing patch
management solution to push KB931836 and KB928388 to the XP clients, Z

Yes, I did it exactly as Microsoft directed in the related KB
article. Although there should be no issue with running the CMD file from
elsewhere since it points directly to the REG and VBS script.

Yes. The registry adjustments are basically just a manual
version of the official patch. The end result is the same. Of course, do some
testing, but in my testing I found it worked perfectly fine on Windows 2000, XP
and 2003 machines.

What we have done was use WSUS to update our XP/2003 machines,
then a GPO to deploy the .exe to 2000 machines. The GPO is also WMI
Filtered for Workstations only. We use the GPO Software Installation to
push out the TZMove tool. Here’s our GPO Startup & Logon
Scripts:

It drive me crazy that REG.EXE and CONTROL.EXE wouldn't
return errorcodes if something went wrong.
I created a variation of the script and added these
steps:
Before Patching,
Verify that the machine still had old database in
registry. Exit if new one was there.
Create REG backup in a subfolder of %ALLUSERS%
Altered the Run command to wait until control.exe is done updating
before continuing -- Example: objshell.Run "control.exe
timedate.cpl,,/Z" & szTzKey, 1, True
Verfied new database was installed in registry
Update Event Logs with verification
results.
It added a few seconds to the patching computer startup but
I was able to validate installations much more easily.
