Hello,

We have two servers; "NITTANY" and "HAPVAL". Nittany recently began
having raid issues that we are unable to resolve, and I had thought
that HAPVAL was setup as a Domain Controller (it appears as one in the
SITES AND SERVERS tool), however when NITTANY was offline nothing was
accessible.

No one could login, names and netpaths wouldn't resolve, etc.

Our setup is very simple, just two servers that I want to replicate.
We were able to get NITTANY back online tonight, however I fear that
it will be going down again, so I am trying to migrate everything off
of it.

I went into the Domain, right clicked on it, and went into "Operations
Master" and changed RID, PDC, and Infrastructure to HAPVAL from
Nittany.

I also went into the NTDS settings on both sides and did a replicate
now, and it said it was sucessful.

Now, if I pull the ethernet connection from Nittany, I would expect
that names (UID mappings), security privileges, etc would be
maintained as they are all (I believe???) on HAPVAL, but this is not
the case.

What is the easiest way to get everything off of NITTANY and onto
HAPVAL so I can completely decomssion HAPVAL.

Thanks and best regards,

- Brent

[ActiveDir] Active Directory Setup Questions

a) Is HAPVAL running MS DNS? (or alternatively, where/how are your clients locating DCs?) If Nittany is currently your only DNS server, or if clients are pointed exclusively to NITTANY for DNS name resolution, then they aren't going to be able to find SRV records (except perhaps via NetBIOS broadcast)

b) Is HAPVAL a global catalogue (GC)?Since you only have a single forest/single domain - make it a GC

c) Why do you believe that data has not replicated from NITTANY to HAPVAL? Have you used a replication tool (replmon etc) to determine if there's a problem with replication? Are you seeing replication errors in the event logs? If not, then perhaps replication isn't the problem as such.

Cheers
Ken

Hi Ken,

This was precisely the issue. I modified the DHCP server, brought up
DNS on HAPVAL, and all was resolved.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Best Regards,
