| Would be interested in hearing about the experiences of large enterprises
who previously had a non-routable Active Directory domain and how they may
have renamed them. Not interested in how so much as I am interested in
who...

| Hi James,
>From my experience, I only renamed a domain called Aeronet and Mirapoint but
it was on NT4 which required starting with the PDC then BDC's , then
removing all the servers and workstations from the domain and re-adding them
with the new domain name.
I haven't had the need yet to rename a 2003 AD domain, but I would probably
think that it's probably better to just build a new Forrest and Migrate to
it using the ADMT?
Any one else care to comment?

| migration or renames...both can take a crap load of work to accomplish...both are considered changes and because of that risks are involved and it is important to mitigate risks when doing changes. it may also depend on the size of the environment what you can/will chosse and if you have a backout plan or not for each step taken
* migration allows for a phased approach... step-by-step you accomplish your task
* domain rename...it is an all or nothing approach and it impacts all the DCs in the forest no matter what domain they are in

| Hi Jorge,
I agree with you, a rename should probably be only done on a very small
domain. On larger domains / forrests a Migration is the best choice due to
time constraints and the resources required.

| Not too small though .. not recommended (nor supported) to rename an
ADdomain on SBS. The internal domain naming is irrelevant and only
political in most cases anyway ...rename the exchange email domain
"branding" ...but not the AD domain.
While Exchange can make the AD domain rename journey these days
...sharepoint HATES it.
