Can anyone recommend any good articles on the changes to the user profiles
in Vista/2008 Server? I've spent some time searching and I haven't found
anything so far that really dives into the differences between the new
profile structure and the old 2000/XP-style one.

Thanks you,
Justin Clay

It is important to understand how each new user profile folder maps to its predecessor in Windows XP, to ensure complete profile interoperability between Windows Vista and Windows XP. The following table maps the new Windows Vista profile folder to its Windows XP predecessor, where applicable.

Read my articles in the last two months' of Windows IT Pro magazine. If
you set up your environment as described, you'll have perfect XP/Vista
cohabitation.

The differences in the profiles are, in sum:

1) Namespace: Vista's subfolders are quite different than XPs, but
junction points support the same namespace

2) The APP DATA folder is particularly different

3) What's in the registry (as with any OS update, but even moreso
with Vista)

If you REDIRECT ALL FOLDERS except App Data , your "V2" profile will
contain only AppData and NTUSER.DAT. That's where you want to be.

Details in my articles. Feel free to ping me directly as well (dan h at
intelliem <top level commercial domain>;)
