I have addressed this issue within my Infrastructure Naming Standards by
mandating that the "Display Name" must allow humans to
correctly\uniquely identify a person in the organisation while the other
attributes such as "User logon Name (pre Windows 2000)" should allow
applications to uniquely identify a person. So the user may request
that we alter the Display Name to what they're commonly known as. I've
also specified that Operations in these cases should add additional smtp
address to the user object. For example I have both rob.singers@ and
robert.singers@, on my account, as a large number of people know me as
Rob rather than Robert.

Now when it comes to HR, they have Employee-ID
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms675662%28VS.85%29.aspx> as a
field with which they can uniquely identify a person. However that
being said, looking at the Schema
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms683980(VS.85).aspx
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms683980(VS.85).aspx> there
also appears to be a Given-Name attribute that could be used. To make
some of this stuff easy we just push it into the the Notes attribute so
you can reference it from the GAL.

Subject: [ActiveDir] preferredName vs. givenName

All,

>From what I can tell, Active Directory does not have a preferredName
field of equivalent. What is recommended for accomodating the
Chuck/Charles and Bob/Roberts of the world in AD who want to be found
and displayed in various applications (Exchange addressing policy, GAL
lookups) by their preferredName? How can they be accomdated, while also
making HR happy by having givenName in the directory?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

-James
