It has the possibility of success, if you do it right. I have seen people blow it up, by not thinking through the process. The single biggest key to the equation:

Once you have booted your virtual on the network, never bring up the physical box again. If you boot the virtual, it replicates, you realize you screwed something up, so you re-run the P2V conversion again, you just hosed your AD.

Also, if the only thing on there is AD, why not just bring up a new virtual box, dcpromo, and then demote the old box?

(I didn't want to hijack the thread, but since this question is somewhat similar to the discussion already at hand, I thought I'd change the subject line appropriately and have at it.)

Has anybody P to V'd a DC? We're contemplating just that. I'm thinking it *should* be OK, since it's kinda like doing a graceful shutdown of a DC, then powering it back up again, only this time it's on a VM instead of on the former standalone box.

But, I've been wrong before. So, that's why I'm asking the experts!
