I prefer the HP ILO/RILOE to the Dell DRAC stuff - but it costs a lot
of money to use all the features of the ILO (eg RDP/SNMP passthrough,
graphical display, LDAP integration, virtual storage).
I haven't tried the IBM remote supervisor (or whatever its called), so
can't comment on that one.
For a smaller setup, you might be happy with Windows Emergency
Management Services, although that won't give you the power on/off
control, and it can be a pain to configure the hardware.

I have to agree with Susan that HP's website really does suck.
And so does getting replacement parts. HP and Sun Microsystems always
seem to argue the toss about what SLA they have.
HP also seem to insist that you install the latest PSP on your server
before they'll consider sending you a replacement PSU.
"But there's smoke coming out of it, and two dead engineers with
severe burns on the floor next to it. I'm pretty sure the PSU is
broken."
"What version of the Proliant Support Pack are you please running sir pleasing?"

I can just imagine an HP tech being told he's got some terminal
disease - only to give a blank expression and a brief protest of "but,
but.. I can't have.. my PSP is up to date".

The other annoying thing with HP is finding the part numbers. I have
asked for CPU fans, given the model, serial and generation of the
server and had HP ask me what the part number is. I can't find it on
their part surfer site, and apparently neither could they.

Some of our customers have their HP kit under a Computacenter support
contract, which works fine except when you want to call them between
the hours of 3am and 6:30am - when their phone lines seem to be
constantly engaged, or 'could not be connected'. Presumably their
24/7/365 helpdesk wakes up some time after 6am.

Dell seem to have a reputation for cheap, poor quality hardware - but
that hasn't been my experience. Although most of our kit is now HP or
Egenera, we still have some Dell and IBM kit of various ages. Some of
the really old Dell stuff is still going strong after 5 years of
continuous service. I also find Dell kit is easier to open up and put
back together.

One nice thing with HP is that their engineers (in the UK) are all
from a company called Phoenix, and they all seem to be well clued-up
and know what they're talking about and what they're doing. I can't
remember the last time we called a Dell engineer out (I think it was
for a laptop keyboard in early 2001), so can't comment on how they
compare. That doesn't mean that Dell have fewer failings that need an
engineer - just that we have much less of their kit than we do of
HP/Sun/Egenera.
