| Hi folks,
Sorry for the OT, but as I'm not the biggest Exchange expert... We have a
situation where mails are comming from iSeries.
On the iSeries side, SMTP destination is configured to the Exchange server.
Telnet on port 25 to the Exchange server works.
On Exchange side, we have 2 organisations & external (internet) mail
routing.
If we send a message from the iSeries in Org1 to a recipient of our Exchange
Org1, the message gets delivered. We find the message using Message
Tracking.
However a message to Exchange Org2 is not delivered. We do not find the
message using Message Tracking.
Ditto for external (internet) messages. We do not find the message using
Message Tracking.
As I'm not the expert at that topic and the case has a history long time
before me: cound it be that the Exchange Default Virtual SMTP Server does
not allow the iSeries to relay? And therefor add the source IP(s) of the
iSeries to allow relaying on the Default SMTP Virtual Server.

| I have no clue what an iSeries is, never heard of THAT product from Apple.

However, your analysis and conclusion are probably correct.
If you have SMTP protocol logging enabled on the Default SMTP Virtual
Server, or on the iSeries, you should be able to see the SMTP errors which
include "relay denied".
In general, I do not recommend (and it gets harder to do in Exchange 2007)
that you ever do anonymous relaying. Most modern applications support some
flavor of SMTP Authentication, which when used, requires no changes to
default Exchange configuration.

| iSeries is indeed not a product from Apple, but IBM :-)
Anyway thanks for your reply. I'm trying to gain more insight in this area.
Today I'll check the configuration on the iSeries side to see if it can do
authentication. Also we have activated the logging on the SMTP Virtual
Server, so I'll review the logs.

| Hi Michael,
Just FYI, it was the relaying configuration indeed. But somewhere somehow
the person in charge didn't found it necessary to keep me in the loop,
although we were right :-)
(that stuff does happen)
And to complete the story, you need to have the proper configuration at
iSeries side as well that it gives all mails to Exchange. Else it will try
to deliver the mails itself. And have all the IP's listed for relaying on
Exchange.
Actually all logical & obvious stuff, but they didn't think about it....
OK frustration is minimized now, continue normal work... :-)
