HI all,
I have a major issue with a SBS 2k3 server. It hang this morning and after a hard reset i get the message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Winnt_root\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I tried acessing recovery mode and set it back but i cant access any files...i even tried to set the boot.ini file back...doesnt
work either: access denied......

In recovery mode i can see the files by the dir command but cant change anything.

Tried registry repair utility: same message access denied

At last i tried a parallel install prior to rebuilding the operating system...but after selecting a new folder on the harddrive for
that installation it stops when examining harddrive (25 %).
Its a raid 1 (mirror) array....all i can think off now is that there is something wrong with the partitions / array.

Pls help.

Thx Jorre

Try updating your Masterboot record first. You can boot into the recovery console and use fdisk /mbr.

Small Business Server 2003 installation starts automatically when you
try to start the Recovery Console from the Dell OEM version of the Small

Also are you SP1 or pre SP1?

Oh and how good are your backups just in case?

Oh .. one last thing, Wininternals http://www.wininternals.com/ has a tool to recover a lost hard drive volume. It's helped me in on several occasions and well worth it's cost. In my opinion it's some thing that every IT department should have.

Good luck and please post to the list how your recovery went.

Jose :-)

Server 2003 sp1... uh.. don't do that... you need to load it all on a
SBS box.
There are known issues with just applying the Windows server sp.

What's the manufacturer and did you get all their bios/rom updates
before applying that Windows 2003 sp1?

I'm prob not the qualified on this thread as I've not recovered a box
post sp1 ...If you are on SP1.... and you are using non SP1 media... you
are going to have fun. That might be what you are seeing.
I know in our backup/restore documents post SP1 you must apply the SP1
first before doing the rest of the recovery process.
I think the info is in here:
Download details: Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server

Yuck.

I thought so. Dell? Lemme go google on the KB that talks about how they have a funky method to get into that recovery console.

Small Business Server 2003 installation starts automatically when you try to start the Recovery Console from the Dell OEM version of
the Small Business Server 2003 CD:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885191
Also are you SP1 or pre SP1?

Oh and how good are your backups just in case?

HI all,
I have a major issue with a SBS 2k3 server. It hang this morning and after a hard reset i get the message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Winnt_root\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I tried acessing recovery mode and set it back but i cant access any
files...i even tried to set the boot.ini file back...doesnt work either: access denied......
In recovery mode i can see the files by the dir command but cant change anything.
Tried registry repair utility: same message access denied

At last i tried a parallel install prior to rebuilding the operating
system...but after selecting a new folder on the harddrive for that installation it stops when examining harddrive (25 %).

Its a raid 1 (mirror) array....all i can think off now is that there is something wrong with the partitions / array.

Pls help.

Thx Jorre

Oh .. one last thing, Wininternals http://www.wininternals.com/ has a tool to recover a lost hard drive volume. It's helped me in on
several occasions and well worth it's cost. In my opinion it's some thing that every IT department should have.

Good luck and please post to the list how your recovery went.

Jose :-)

You can not restore a ghost image _IF_ you have more than 1 DC in your AD
forest. Doing so can cause replicated inconsistencies and corruption, so
you should be very sure before you restore a ghost image of a DC. If this
is the only DC for a child domain in a forest with other domains, and
ghost is your only backup method, you are kind of in a jam. Let me know
if that is the case, and I'll try to help you get out of it ...

Since you are using SBS, hopefully you'll only have one DC, and won't be
in this jam. Ghost is not a recommended backup method for DCs in any
case.

Yep its the one and only dc......

Am kinda pass that station ....have set up an additional drive with win 2k...could see files of the array, but not acces them.....
Used GetDataBack for NTFS
http://www.runtime.org
That works like a charm....with this tool i can make a copy off all partitions...so am doin that now, just in case backup restore
fails for data partition....have copy of complete system partition to then

But then what?.......reinstall sbs and restore system state?
