| We have an unreliable DC within our root domain, it has a habit of crashing
on a regular basis, it hosts our primary active directory intergraded DNS
server and was the first server to be built within our root domain. We have transferred the Operational Masters roles, RID, PDC, Infrastructure,
and Schema to another server but need to move DNS, or do WE??? I?m trying to get to a point where I can switch this server off and replace
the hardware and reload, at the moment when I switch this server off, no one
is able to login, and the domain becomes unavailable due to what I think is
DNS related or is it..? Our current platform is a mixture of 2000 and 2003 servers, with all
workstation running WinXP, we have three secondary DNS servers one within
our root domain and two within our child domain, Please help
Thanks
Neil

| You don't need to "move" DNS per se, but you do need to start the DNS
service on at least one other DC in the domain.
It sounds like your clients are trying to use the bad DC as a DNS
resolver. You'll need to fix their IP configuration to use another
resolver. You should be able to do that through DHCP, assuming they use
DHCP, or through a GPO setting.

| Hi Neil,
As long as you have another AD integrated DNS server, you should be
alright.
Some concerns to lookout for are that your DHCP servers give out another
DNS server, and that any statically configured clients are update to
point to a functional server.
You may just need to do a little cleanup in your AD DNS zone to remove
the old removed name server.

| Which domain controller is configured to be your GC?
Which server is DHCP pointing to for DNS purposes? -ASB
