| Just
out of curiosity, whatmakes people think it's appropriate to refer
toMicrosoft as "M$" on an MS-focused mailing list whose participants
include Microsoft employees, Microsoft contractors, Microsoft MVPs and various
other people who may have a relatively positiveview of
Microsoft?

| Some MVPs use that as well and when asked say they don't realize that it
offends and just use it as slang. But yeah if it's meant to imply that
Microsoft is rolling in dough.. folks go grab the 10K... and stop
looking at the cash account only, offset that with the accounts
receivable and then go read the "Risk" analysis section of that annual
report. It's an interesting read.
I honestly get more tired of the "oh but they have billions in the bank"
comments. (is that before the liabilities or after?)
BTW...After the Novell deal can we start using $u$e now? :-)

Not that I really care if people say M$ or
not, but I thought I’d comment on one thing, in the name of full
disclosure….
My participation on this list has __nothing__
to do with money. I don’t get compensated on any level for this. Heck, I
don’t even work on AD anymore, so this is like 2 degrees of separation
away from anything that MS compensates me for.
So, is MS out to make $? Sure.
Is AD part of that money-making strategy? Sure.
Does that have anything to do with MS
employee participation on this list? I don’t think so. Others (at least
those that I can recall posting here as I type this mail) on this list fall in
to the same boat. A couple of them don’t work on AD anymore either.
Why do I hang out here? I do it because I
care about customers and about AD/ADAM. It has nothing to do with my salary.
It’s also why I still blog about AD,
answer newsgroup questions, answer internal questions (DLs, PSS, MCS, other
PGs, etc.), handle direct emails from a myriad of non-MS people (some I know, some
are totally out of the blue), fix code for people that ask for help, etc. I don’t
get paid for any of this.

Hey Susan, not quite sure
what report you were looking at, but their FY06 10-K shows a net income of
$12.6B with EPS of $1.21 and cash dividends of $0.35/common share ... it also
shows a positive cash flow of $6.7B ... I'm no CPA, but I'm pretty sure that
means they won't be filing for bankruptcy protection anytime soon. :) And
speaking of AP/AR, as of that filing, they had $2.9B outstanding in AP and $2.0B
in AR for a net difference of $900M ... once again, I would hardly say it's time
to raise the red flag... :)

any other big company they are out to make $.
Every for-profit company is out there to make money, not just
big ones. Every one of us who is working for a for-profit company is working
for a company who’s primary reason for existence is to make money. And every
one of us who is trading our hours for dollars is doing it for the money regardless
of whether you love it anyway or not. (if this was a yacht sailing list or a
mountaineering list that might not be the case, but being an AD list, I’d
pretty confident my statement is true J). Just because Microsoft has made a LOT
of money doesn’t make them evil, it makes them successful –
something we all strive to be. They’ve also made a significant positive impact
on the world, and provide a livelihood for probably half if not more of the
members of this list.
I think M$ stems
from an anti-capitalist, anti-establishment mentality, which is nice for
idealists with trust funds but not so nice for people living in such
environments (ask someone who lived in an Eastern Block country in the soviet era
who wasn’t a big party member).
Good point to bring
up, Laura, I was thinking the same thing when I saw it initially…

| I didn't honestly see anything in the risk factors of the 10Q that any other
software business doesn't declare. I read it as basically saying that
Microsoft has competition from various sources that could threaten its
business model. That's pretty normal. I think its fair to say, based on the
big dividend disbursement they did, I want to say last year, that they have
plenty of spare cash. I can see it as being a big dilemma, actually.
Typically software companies use their cash, among other things, to do
acquisitions. But MS' precarious legal position around the world, I can
imagine, makes it really hard to do acquisitions that won't receive endless
scrutiny. Not that I'm feeling that sorry for them, but, from the
perspective of trying to run and grow the business, I imagine that would
frustrate more than one person in Redmond.

Only several of the lists I frequent, if you use MS, then the
Morgan-Stanley people get all up in arms. And typing MSFT is just too
long. :-)

| ;o)
Always the shit kicker Laura. :)
Me... M$ doesn't bother me and I do have a relatively
positive view on MSFT (Even Exchange on days that I don't have todeal with
it). Not because they are involved with my paycheck in some fashion, if I
weren't working on their stuff I would be working on someone else's stuff and
still making money. Maybe more, maybe less, can't really tell. If I had to
guess, I would probably be paid more and I would be a high end UNIX or
application guy and not having to listen to admins tell me how great they are or
how amazing they were in their last job while screwing things up in their
current job. Then again, I could be pearl diving too, I am pretty good at it, I
made a "living" doing it for years and always have it to fall back on. Hopefully
the next time I do that though it will be in an eatery that I own.
:o)
What I *do think* about this though is that it makes the
person who uses it look kind of bad or possibly less intelligent. I try not to
look at them bad but I seem to inadvertently toss them into a category I reserve
for script kiddies and two bit hackers and OS Bigots (of any religion) and
others who consider themselves "L33T" or otherwise too cool for school. Folks
that use alternate spelling choices for words are doing their darndest to get me
to ignore them because it is a PITA to read something that has all the
purposeful misspellings in it. There is too much well written stuff out there to
waste your time trying to decode something written so poorly. I think some people do it simply because MSFT is on top and
a lot of less skilled and/or less capable people like to make themselves look
better or important by trying to knock down or otherwise ridicule thosewho
have a higher perceived standing than themselves. I think overall Microsoft has
done more for commoditizing the PC industry and standardizing things in it than
any other company or group in the world. Without them, I think we would still be
in a world of very costly business machines and almost nothing reasonable
available for the home. While they may not do things the best, they actually get
things out there.
Oh yeah, I think as a whole, most MSFT employees are
severely underpaid for what they do for Microsoft and the community as a whole.
To even it out though, like in any company, there are people in (or were in)
MSFT that are/were lucky to even have a job. While I tend to hear a lot of nasty
things about MSFT as a company, hearing nasty things about individual employees
is not so common. I don't think the company is evil. Much of the time I think
that them trying to be purposely evil would be a stretch and tough for their
overall method of management and internal communication and something they would
have to spend considerable time trying to work at sort of like security...
;o) I think of MSFT mostly as an oversized puppy that tends to accidently
step on toes and accidently bite too hard when playing.
So anyway, not that I am looking for
an apology or think that the guy owes anyone one. I would just give a
recommendation to avoidlanguage/spelling like thateven if others are
doing it as it is certain to get at least some people to start ignoring them at
a minimum. joe --

that have to deal with the Department of Justice and EU quite as much or
to quite the same extent on a annual basis. Merry, Joel (US - Philadelphia) wrote:

highly doubt that any MS employee takes offence at what is surely as tongue in
cheek expression.
Let's not get _too_ PC please :/

Just
out of curiosity, whatmakes people think it's appropriate to refer
toMicrosoft as "M$" on an MS-focused mailing list whose participants
include Microsoft employees, Microsoft contractors, Microsoft MVPs and various
other people who may have a relatively positiveview of
Microsoft?

Hello
everyone. After reading through a lot of the posts on this mailing
list, I realize I could make my job easier if I knew how to script.
I have no experience in scripting, but would like to know what books do
you recommend as a beginner's book on scripting? Also, I don't
really know the difference between WSH and VBScript, so if anyone could
explain that, I'd appreciate that. After browsing through Amazon, I
saw several books on WSH and VBScript, but don't know where I should focus
on. I'm also open to computer based training (CBT) videos of any
