| I'm running a 2003 native domain, and when I switched over to 2003, some of
the slower machines were having a hard time logging on to the domain. At
points, the user would wait 5-10 minutes to get on. I've kind of tracked
down where the issue may be, and it usually happens during the "Personalized
Settings" part of the login. Is there anyway to either make a default
personalized settings for everyone, or just make that part of the login not
happen?
I have tried using a default profile, but even that doesn't solve the
problem.
Thanks
ernesto

| If this was a SBS group we'd say "please post up the ipconfig /all from
a workstation and the server" as we'd guess it was DNS related.
Big serverland folks tend to be more paranoid...but you need to ensure
that XP's only are looking to the DCs for their DNS and then the DC's
use root hints or forwarders.

AFAIK There is no need for XP clients to look to DCs for DNS. DNS can run on
any server.

| There's a number of different things this could be, and without knowing more about your AD and the way you have your profiles configured it's hard to say - are you using roaming profiles or local profiles? Are you using multiple sites? If site boundaries are configured incorrectly (or not configured at all) you could be authenticating to an inappropriate DC and slowing the whole process down. Also, is it happening every time the users log on or just at the initial login? Does the problem roam with users or is it limited to just a handful of machines?
Cheers,
David Alexander

| But, again AFAIK, there is no requirement to have AD-integrated DNS servers
for XP clients, for logons to work without problems.
It's just easier, and the more usual setup, to have DNS running on DCs (and
to have the DNS AD-integrated), but it's not a requirement to get everything
working (again AFAIK. Happy to be corrected!)
Cheers

| You're correct. DNS does not have to be hosted on a DC, and Windows clients
do not have to be pointed to AD-integrated DNS servers. However, only DCs
can host AD-integrated replicas of DNS zones.
And I don't think that's hair-splitting. :-)

| You are correct. You can load netlogon.dns into a bind server (or a wintel box) and do dynamic updates (or I suppose no updates) via either of those two mechanisms as well. Obviously you now have to make sure you have an adequate master/slave architecture to go along with this.
Thanks,

| All the DNS/IP info is correct, and it is pointing to our AD integrated DNS
server. All workstations are DHCP with reservations, they can't look
anywhere else for authentication. Everything seems to load fine until XP
begins to do the "Personalized settings". Every logon after that is not a
problem, it's just the first time. I know that XP creates folders for each
user the first time, but I was wondering if there was any way to speed up
this process as sometimes it does take a long long time. -----Original Message-----
