I have a laptop user who logs onto our domain everyday with
his laptop docked, and logs on using same domain credentials when working from
home undocked. This morning when he logged in while docked in the office, a ‘blank’
profile loaded on his desktop. It had the Windows XP default background, all
shortcuts were missing, e-mail (Outlook Mail Profile)was not configured etc. I
logged him off and back on, same thing. Started nosing around and found a
profile (folder) named TEMP in his Documents and Setting folder. His normal profile
was there and intact but for some reason will not load at log in. Does anyone
know what might cause this? How to fix or force his actually profile to load?

Thanks

Todd Hofert

From my experience this is generally
the sign of a corrupt profile. Rename his profile and let windows create
a new one, then copy thing like My Documents and Favorites, etc.

Thanks,

This happened to our network
administrator. He logged onto his laptop from home and received a blank
profile. He copied all his profile data into the new profile folder and got his
desktop back to the way he wanted it. The next time he logged on (in the office
the next day), he received his old profile again, but the new profile disappeared
and all his documents went with it. They were nowhere to be found, and he had
no viruses or anything of the sort.

Just a word to the wise - make absolutely sure
the user’s documents are backed up in a safe place before proceeding.

The “TEMP” profile loads when the users’s normal profile is unable to load. This can happen frequently if you’re using roaming profiles and the roaming profile is unavailable for some reason. It can also happen if the user’s normal profile was not properly unloaded the last time they logged off and there are still open handles to it. In that case, have the user reboot before logging back on again and they will solve that issue.Brian Cline wrote: This happened to our network administrator. You might want to roll out UPH Clean (Its on the MS download
site). Its a bit late in this case but it can help. Also make sure that
"off-line folders" is disabled on the server for the profile
share.
