In actuality, I expect most of the third party GUI shells that have been
available for years and years will likely work just fine on Server Core. It
isn't that Server Core doesn't have GUI capability, it doesn't have the
Windows Explorer Shell. You could run into issues if the shell replacement
is looking for something else that also got stripped but I expect quite a
few of the alternate shells will work fine.

Freddy,

As this would be me to blame for writing this piece of app after being
bugged for month by a fellow MVP (hi Daniel ! You still own me a beer
:-P), feel free to drop a line if you stumble upon issues.

There are some gotchas related to IIS features when installing - this is
explained here:

Actually, it was me who forced him to do it... I still owe Guy a few pints
of beer...

http://www.petri.co.il/manage-windows-server-2008-core-settings-coreconfigurator.htm

The best part is me, giving a 90 minute demo of Server Core in front of 350
people, then after all the command line and other stuff, I pop up the tool
that has been waiting installed on my demo machine, and telling them "now
forget everything I just said, use this instead". Imagine the laughter...
true story.

No no no! I will not write Server Manager from scratch !

As for your NIC issue, you will see in the tool that there are no
network interfaces to configure. That should give you a hint ;)

If I get some time, I might add some driver installation dialog (you
point to a driver, I try to install it), but nothing fancy. Meanwhile
I'm working on adding DCPROMO answer file generation to get this DCPROMO
disabled button finally enabled.

This will not work if the interface is not present (and this is the case
if the drivers are not loaded).

To see the listing of the existing interfaces, run:

netsh int show int

Have no experience with ESX, but on VMWare Server all you need to do is
from the VMWare menu select: "Install VMWare tools". Because autorun is
disabled in Core, you'll need to change to the drive that will be
mounted by VMWare (usually the next available letter) and run either MSI
or setup.exe from there.

What i posted is the strawman - you'll have to goof around with it to make
it work on your machine no doubt.
