In a multi domain forest with about 25 W2k3 SP1 DC's, which steps
should be considered in planning the SP2 deploy? The process will be
done manually and using remote desktop (mstsc /console)

- FSMO first or last..?
- Should prepare Proliant Support Pack minimum base level + Firmware?
- There are any case that something gone wrong?
- Any recommendation on RDP ?

thx

1. Ensure you are on the latest nic drivers
2. post sp2 hack off the advanced networking crud
3. Consider VNC? Ilo? As a back door. As when I lost ts/rdp post
sp2, that box is equivalent to 'dead' to you remotely.

Basic steps :

Ensure all your drivers and apps are compatible with SP2.
Disc space
Backups are available.
ilo is indeed accessible

I've seen some qlogic hba iscsi card drivers are not compatible. Another case was a virtual server with sp1 unable to install sp2. had to reinstall sp1 and then sp2.
Few machines we had to disable mcafee services as SP2 couldnt complete. MSTSC should be running i think.

I second the post sp2 advanced networking stuff. We were affected by that
*new* feature.

1) Copy the service pack files locally if possible. This eliminates the
chances of a failure on the remote server interrupting the install.

2) Turn off AV services

3) Make sure your firmware updates are current, especially if you are using
Dell boxes. NIC drivers as Susan mentioned. Copy the firmware files
locally too.

4) Assume you need a KVM, ILO or some other means to install. Although
remote desktop will work most of the time, when you need it most most like
you'll loose connectivity. Murphy's law.

5) Make sure you have a recent system state backup of critical DC's, FSMO
role holders especially.

Hope that helps.

So I only have one question - why are you going to do 25 boxes by hand?

well... normally this boxes are constantly on, may need particular firmware
updates, nic drivers, will not do it in the same day... better control of
secondary efects... they are mostly HP Proliant.

That actually is offered up in MU if you want to go that route.

I personally turned it off in the registry, the nic GUI and installed
those patches. I wasn't taking any chances given the list of possible
issues that can occur.

Every single time we have ...what we define as just network weirdness...
someone in our group says "Is this a sp2 box?" and 99 times out of 100
SP2's networking stuff has been at fault.

It will even occur as you are deploying a new slip installed SP2 box.
The Advanced networking stuff is installed and it's finally later that
we go 'duh'.

I'm sure there are folks that find that it works/helps them. I
personally would like to know who they are, because I think the list
would be small.

you mean :

To manually disable RSS and TCP Offload, follow these steps:
1. Click *Start*, click *Run*, type regedit, and then click *OK*. 2. Locate
the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
3. Right-click *EnableTCPChimney*, and then click *Modify*. 4. In the *Value
data* box, type 0, and then click *OK*. 5. Right-click *EnableRSS*, and then
click *Modify*. 6. In the *Value data* box, type 0, and then click
*OK*. 7. Right-click
*EnableTCPA*, and then click *Modify*. 8. In the *Value data* box, type 0,
and then click *OK*. 9. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
If you set the value of the EnableTCPChimney registry entry to 1, the TCP
Chimney functionality is enabled. Similarly, if you set the values of the
EnableRSS and EnableTCPA registry entries to 1, the RSS functionality and
the TCPA functionality are enabled.
