| Would I be right in thinking that you can't control Virtual PC 2007 via GPO. Specifically I want to redirect the "My Virtual Machines" machines folder that gets created under "My Documents" back to the local hard drive.

| You could use Process Monitor while you start VPC or the wizard that loads this string or whatever, and then search the results for the 'My Virtual Machines' string. Assuming it loads from the registry you could make a custom ADM to change the path via GP.

| I have a feeling that it's not set in the registry - it's hard coded into the VPC application. Ben Armstrong explained how it works a while back in one of the MVP chats. I'll see if I can did it up.
Cheers Ken

This is better that VPC 2004 which IIRC placed them in the profile by default, leading to certain people prone to id10T errors complaining about their log on tacking half an hour when they had put a 2GB VHD into their roaming profile.
So I was hoping there was a way to redirect <My Virtual Machines> back to the local disk, either via an adm or registry tattooing. I'm not looking at automatically moving existing VMCs and VHDs. Just in preventing future "mistakes".

Just so I'm clear, are you simply looking for a way of telling a VPC instance running on a desktop system to not store its VMs in My Docs by default, or are you also looking for something that will also move the existing VMs that have been redirected, back to the local machine?

I've checked User Shell Folders and Shell Folders and there's nothing. I looked under the VPC keys. I looked for an ini or xml file in the install directory. I did a "Windows Live" search and found people complaining about the lack of GPO integration with Virtual PC 2004. I didn't really find much on VPC 2007.
I figured with the number of people here that use virtualisation and the fact that we're all likely to be GPO whores, that someone may have tried before :-)

Hi Robert-
I think you might have a hard time doing this if you are currently using Folder Redirection to redirect My Docs. You might just want to check, for a given user account, under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders and see if My Virtual Machines is listed as a folder type there. If so, you could try changing its value to the default profile location, but my experience with pre-Vista and Folder Redirection is that if the parent folder is redirected, using this registry tweak to try and move sub-folders of it do not work.
