Yes I do know the original meaning of "merkin", it was force of habit.
It's a Usenet in-joke, and something I probably should not use in other
fora.

It's been observed that people from the USA take themselves very
seriously when they first join global fora. They also refer to
themselves as "A merkin", even tho' there are several countries in the
North American continent and whole bunch more in Central and Southern
America. So us cheeky "furriners" refer to them as "merkins", with the
resulting giggles when they consult a dictionary. There is also a
tendency for some people to self identify as "merkin" to indicate they
don't take themselves too seriously.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what 'merkin' means, or are you just
using it as a convenient contraction?

BTW, this Merkin doesn't need a merkin...

2. If things go wrong on a Sunday change, you have
Australia and the Kiwi's coming online that afternoon (EST) as their
Monday morning so you will be quickly getting them chewing you out as
they had to get their critical Monday morning work done, then as the
evening (EST) rolls in you get the same calls from Europe and by the
next morning if you still haven't gotten it sorted out because you are
spending most of your time on the phone with Aussie and European execs,
you then have the Americas calling and doing the same but worse they are
stopping by your desk to give it a personal touch... In the meanwhile,
because several thousand changes were made globally no one is really
sure what exactly broke what and in some cases if what people are
complaining about actually ever worked the way they were saying it was
supposed to workΐ]...

It was also my experience working for the evil Empire that any
Virus\Worm with a date trigger went off in NZ first on a Monday and I'd
be hip deep in diagnostics and submitting files to A/V vendors by the
time the merkins could get on line or stumble into the office. Trying
to factor in Sunday changes just made that more difficult. Generally it
also lead to a bunch of emergency changes. ACLs and the like being put
about the place to kill any further propagation of network storms.
