| I was able to get everything switched over to my other server this weekend with minimal issues. I took the old DC offline and it is shut down at the moment and replication seems to be happening just fine. However, I noticed in Active Directory Sites and Services that the old DC is listed in the list for servers. My thoughts are that the operations master is still trying to replicate with the old DC listed and that I should remove it there along with the computer account in AD. I am getting a Replication error in Event Viewer ID 1645 NTDS Replication and my thinking this error has to do with old server still showing up there. Does that sound like the correct way to resolve this issue?

Ok. I have the schema extended to Windows Server 2003 R2 and then I was able to add in the new R2 domain controller. Now I am following KB article 324801 to transfer over all of the FSMO roles to the new DC. When I try to do the first step of transferring the schema master role, I get an error message when using the MMC snap in for this. The error message is that "The domain controller could not be set. The parameter is incorrect". I have type in the FQDN of the new DC and just the computer name of the new DC and neither work. I have googled this and have not really come up with anything valid.

You should have no disruption during production hours. Once dcpromo has finished, client PC's might use this server to authenticate, but that shouldn't cause any issues.
DNS/WINS - no issues if the client PC's aren't pointing to it. AD-integrated DNS zones will replicate over. WINS will just sit there happy with little/no records.
Removing the old DC & putting this new DC in its place would best be done after hours, especially since you want to keep it as the same IP as the old one.

You can move the DHCP to the new server (and thus keep all your existing leases & settings), otherwise, you're going to have recreate all the settings on the new server. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc776587.aspx is what I follow to do that.
You didn't say that you wanted to keep the same name, just the same IP address . So you could promote the new server as a DC & transfer the operations master role to the new server before taking down the old one. That way you can verify AD replication, get DNS/WINS working. Then when you're ready to make the switch, dcpromo down the old server & power it off. Change the IP on the new server to the same as the old server & reboot the new DC.

Hello All:
I have a scenario that I would like to run past some knowledgeable folks on this list. I have an Active Directory 2003 server that is acting as the Operations Master, DNS, WINS, DHCP server and it needs to be replaced. We have another server on our network that is running everything from an AD standpoint except for the Operations Master roles. I have another server built and ready to go, but I want to use the same IP address as the old server only so that I will not have to re-configure DHCP scopes and any computers that have static addresses with another IP address for DNS/WINS etc.. My process that I have thought out is the following:
1. Transfer over the Operations Master roles to our other Domain Controller and make it the Operations Master for the domain 2. Run DCPROMO to demote old Domain controller and then turn old server off 3. Bring the new server online with the same IP address as the old domain controller 4. Install AD,DNS, WINS on new server 5. Configure DHCP on new server
Anyone see a potential pitfall with this scenario? Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

| This is normal - you need to manually delete the server object in sites and services (there shouldn't be an NTDS Settings object under it though anymore). Cleanup the computer account too.
No idea what a event 1645 is - perhaps you could paste it in.

I am assuming I can do the AD, DNS/WINS installations without causing too much disruption during production?

| If the old DC was a DNS Server it is likely to still be a listed a name server for AD-integrated zones, so you should remove it from there too.
Also don't forget to make the new DC a GC, assuming the old one was.

This is normal - you need to manually delete the server object in sites and services (there shouldn't be an NTDS Settings object under it though anymore). Cleanup the computer account too.
No idea what a event 1645 is - perhaps you could paste it in.

Log on to the server you want to get the schema role and try again

Ok I am adding in the new DC this morning, but when I try to install active directory, I get an error about running adprep and forestprep because I am introducing a Windows Server 2003 R2 server and the current forest is running off of Windows Server 2003 only. Do I run the adprep and forestprep on the new server that I am trying to make a domain controller? I think these tools would be on the Windows Server 2003 R2 Disc?

You should have no disruption during production hours. Once dcpromo has finished, client PC's might use this server to authenticate, but that shouldn't cause any issues.
DNS/WINS - no issues if the client PC's aren't pointing to it. AD-integrated DNS zones will replicate over. WINS will just sit there happy with little/no records.
Removing the old DC & putting this new DC in its place would best be done after hours, especially since you want to keep it as the same IP as the old one.
