Has anyone gotten the Exchange System Manager for Windows Vista to
work?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3403d74e-8942-4

I try to install it and it asks for Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI
Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1 but this can't be installed
with Outlook.

This is the official line, not sure if it can be jigged.

Exchange
<http://blogs.msdn.com/stephen_griffin/archive/2008/08/25/exchange-system-ma
nager-for-vista.aspx> System Manager for Vista

We recently released a downloadable
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3403d74e-8942-421b
-8738-b3664559e46f&DisplayLang=en> Exchange System Manager (ESM) for
Exchange 2003 which can be installed on Vista machines. Part of what made
this possible was the changes
<http://blogs.msdn.com/stephen_griffin/archive/2008/06/02/this-just-in-mapi-
and-windows-server-2008-now-get-along.aspx> we did recently to allow
Exchange's implementation of the MAPI client binaries to run on Vista.

Some interesting tidbits from the Release Notes:

* The downloadable ESM depends on the MAPI Download
<http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=68174> , which must be installed
first.
* Therefore - the ESM and Outlook cannot be installed on the same
machine. Of course, this is old news - we've
<http://blogs.msdn.com/stephen_griffin/archive/2004/07/03/exchange-and-outlo
ok-on-the-same-machine.aspx> never supported the ESM and Outlook on the
same machine.
* This download is for Vista only. It does not support Windows Server
2008.

I have EMC/2007 and Outlook 2007 running on my Win 2008 box, both happy as can be. It's been ~6 months since I loaded everything, so I can't remember which I installed first. I do recall that the EMC installation wasn't happy with UAC, and I had to disable that for the install to succeed.

What if we remove Outlook, install ESM then re-install Outlook. Will
that work?

I try to install it and it asks for Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI

with Outlook.

VMWare Workstation 6.5 has the Unity feature which lets you run apps in windowed mode (think like Citrix) directly on your desktop. You would barely know they're running in a VM and not directly under your session on your PC.

EMC/Outlook 2007 on the same box is a supported config - they no longer share the libraries which used to conflict.

It is fully supported, and in fact, there are scenarios where it is required
for the Exchange 2007 System Tools to be installed on the same computer
where Outlook is installed.

Outlook vs. the Exchange 2003 system tools are a much more tenuous
proposition, and I side with Mr. Desmond in recommending the use of an XP
VM.

Does anyone know of a good forum to discuss ESX implementations on HP
blades?

Thanks,

VMWare Workstation 6.5 has the Unity feature which lets you run apps in
windowed mode (think like Citrix) directly on your desktop. You would
barely know they're running in a VM and not directly under your session
on your PC.

With all due respect, there hasn't been a single crappy app that I use
on a daily basis that I haven't been able to get working flawlessly with
Vista.

Life isn't necessarily easier, it's just different. I read from that
that he just needs a machine without Outlook, the OS platform is
irrelevant.... it's Outlook that is the block here.

This package will not install on a system on which any version of
Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or earlier is
installed."

VMWare has discussion forums on their website and HP has the IT Resource Center forums on their website...

Perhaps consider picking a new subject next time seeing as this has nothing to do with the original thread...

It's obviously possible to get it to work on a Vista machine but if
you're going to dedicate a VM to just running Exchange tools then using
a Vista VM takes a lot more resource than an XP VM so in that sense life
is easier.
