Hello Community,

I'm looking for a way to mass migrate a bunch of machines joined to one
domain to another domain. I'm guessing we will need to employ the use of
NETDOM? I have a few questions on this..

1) Are there other tools to accomplish this?
2) If NETDOM is the way we go, I cringe to think we will need a clear text
password in a script file, is there another way?
3) Could this be performed through a GPO?
4) A client reboot is a necessary, isnt't it?
5) How have you automated domain migrations like this?

Thanks,
Rand.

Depending on the scope of the migration (ie if it's large) I would
recommend Quest Domain Migrator. It takes care of moving the machines,
updating the user profiles, moving the users, and migrating Exchange and
SQL users and permissions.

Thanks,
Andrew

Or ADMT, for a free equivalent to the Quest tool.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ae279d01-7dca-413c-a9d2-b42dfb746059

For a freebie, it's surprisingly fully-featured. The Quest tool has prettier
reporting and does a bit better on doing any rollbacks of migration tasks,
but you can't beat ADMT for the pricetag.

[Brian Desmond] ADMT has some command line/scriptable interfaces

2) If NETDOM is the way we go, I cringe to think we will need a clear text password in a script file, is there another way?
[Brian Desmond] Yes presunably. You could scheme some sort of obfuscation scheme

3) Could this be performed through a GPO?
[Brian Desmond] I suppose with a startup script

4) A client reboot is a necessary, isnt't it?
[Brian Desmond] Yes

5) How have you automated domain migrations like this?
[Brian Desmond] Yes

Thanks,
Rand.

Rand... you do know that the ADMT is free, right? The only "effect"
impacting a user will be the restart of the machine, which would be
required of course any time a machine joins another domain...

Thanks folks! It seems there is no easy (free) way to do this behind
the scenes.. Users will be affected. :p So much for trying to be sly,
we will have to schedule these I suppose.

Yup.. thats what I will be using. :) Thanks. I wanted to try and be sly
and migrate them invisibly.. but since we have users on laptops at all
hours, schedules will be required :( The desktops arent so bad as they are
always on and we could work around them.. its the mobile users that pose
slight issues.
