| For all of you who have children, let me share with you MY first memory as a child.
I was barely two years old. My mom and dad sat me down in front of our black-and-white television and told me, clearly, that this was something important to remember. We then watched Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. While I was only two years old, the memory stuck in my mind and to this day it is the earliest memory I have as a child.
For those of you watching history being made tomorrow, be sure to tell your kids clearly that it is important to remember... they will!!!
Best wishes, and now back to our regularly scheduled A.D. programming... :-)

| The first moon landing was important. I remember watching - I was 12. Stayed up until 4am with friends.
The inauguration of this President, or any other President in living memory? Not so much. He's a nice guy, very intelligent, and all that. But he's just another politician with bad ideas about how to run the economy.
For my money, the last good President was Ford.

| I'm not political. I can't find enough energy to care overly much. I think politicians above the local city block level are pretty much all crooks or people with good intentions and bad ideas or just plain folks with bread and circuses mentalities. Maybe the US will get better or maybe not. Maybe it was going to get better or maybe not on its own.
I would like to say this though for the comparison made. How much time do we spend on the moon nowadays? All we did, and not even everyone believes thisΏ], is show that it could be done. Its like if I wrote a vbscript to query the directory and showed that it could be done and never moved up and wrote AdFind and the other toolsΐ]. Doing something once is exciting and all but repeating it so that it isn't a blip on the RADAR when it is done again and again, that is accomplishment.
Today, to me, we get our 44th US President sworn in. No more, no less. He has, if he chooses to accept it, a lot of work in front of him if he can even work out with those around him what it truly is that needs to be done to fix things. With luck, he along with the rest of the coddled/pampered politiciansΑ] in Washington will make a difference and things will get better. Here's to hope.

ΐ] Not to downplay this at all. I believe we did it and I think it was a spectacular achievement. But was is the key word. All it proves now is that we have become a risk adverse and government regulation fat society. If this mentality were in place back in covered wagon days we wouldn't have moved much beyond the borders of Virginia... You would see headlines of "Settlers left Richmond and were never heard from again, broken wagon wheel suspected to have killed entire group, Mrs. Grundy lobbies for oversight on all plans and all future trips west out of Virginia are on hold until further notice.".

| Sorry... my original statement was about the clearly (and apolitical) message that swearing in the first african american (or mixed race, either way!) man as president of the USA sends to our children about the progress of history. I hope that we're able to revel in it--we can chose to do so, for at least a moment.

| Even though I don't live in the US, I have to agree with Dan here.
Giving women the vote - was that "history being made" or just what we should just accept as being natural and women not voting just an aberration? Ώ]
For similar historic reasons, the swearing in of the first non-white US president ΐ] shows the ability of the US polity to regenerate itself, regardless of all its flaws, corruption and distortions. In many other countries (even developed countries in Europe and Japan), recovering from the injustices of non-equal rights and even just the concept of minority representation are still a long way away.
My mother is Japanese and the concept of a non-native Japanese rising to political power or even the concept of mass immigration is beyond possibility at the moment. In Australia only in the last few months have we had the political courage to apologise for the dispossession of the native inhabitants under legal fiction.
I don't want to appear as a bleeding-heart liberal here. I just want to point out that these types of events show that your system can adjust, recognise the errors of past ways and put them behind - allowing the country to look to the future, rather than be mired in the mistakes and hatred of the past. Many places in the world - from Israel/Palestine to Somalia to Nicaragua to any number of places the people would love for the same opportunity to peacefully move forward.
Cheers Ken
Ώ] I'll leave aside the possible belief that women shouldn't be able to vote ΐ] I'll leave aside the equally loony belief that's he likely to be assassinated or otherwise prevented from being sworn in - I have faith in the security effort

| Its easy to be cynical about our government and the indivulas that "run" it (and I would add, we SHOULD be cynical about them) but as Dan said, the first african american president to be sworn in, regardless of politics, is as big a event as the moon landing And hopefully, unlike that, not just a one shot deal as Joe pointed out.
Regardless of politics I would take in the event in the apolitical spirit of history being made

Cheers
Ken
Ώ] I'll leave aside the possible belief that women shouldn't be able to vote
ΐ] I'll leave aside the equally loony belief that's he likely to be assassinated or otherwise prevented from being sworn in - I have faith in the security effort

Sorry... my original statement was about the clearly (and apolitical) message that swearing in the first african american (or mixed race, either way!) man as president of the USA sends to our children about the progress of history. I hope that we're able to revel in it--we can chose to do so, for at least a moment.

| This is a blog post I wrote late in the evening on 11/4 - it still says how I feel about this period in history, from my own personal perspective:
November 04 WOW - Just WOW! President Elect Barak Obama... that sounds nice! For a very long time, I have wondered if there was ever going to be a major political candidate who represented my family in more than just politics... As of tonight, we now have that! Barack Obama has just been named President Elect, and John McCain has conceded. When I became pregnant with my first son, who would have a white mother and a black father, my parents asked me if I knew what I was getting myself into. I told them I did, because I accepted that loving my (now-ex)husband and child meant that I would possibly be subjected to racism, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. We chose to live in California, and to never travel into areas that were more pronounced in their racism (such as Arkansas where my ex-husband's family is based) because he never wanted to subject us to that side of life. We had two more children before divorcing, leaving their white mother to raise three multiracial children.
Over the years, my children have experienced a small amount of racism, but it HAS surfaced on occasion. It has come from other children who parrot what they hear at home, from looks trying to figure out where my kids' parents were or if I was the babysitter, and from other adults who looked at my children as if they should be lucky to be raised in a white middleclass neighborhood, because then they wouldn't be "ghetto". I hate that term... "ghetto". It has so many connotations that are just so very negative, all rolled up in one word.
>From the very beginning, it was clear that my children would be viewed as being "black" or "african-american", even though they were more than 50% white. Their hair, skin tone and facial features made it easy to "identify" them as non-white. What wasn't seen was that they were raised in a very diverse, multiethnic family, comprised of black, white, asian, native american and hispanic family members. All of these pieces of the family contributed to their very well rounded personalities, plus it emphasized all that is good about each group. They learned to love corned beef (not just for St. Patrick's Day!) as well as gumbo and BBQ. Holidays were shared between their father's house and my family, which meant that they spent time with all the parts of the family. All the celebrations ... all the love ... all the best of everyone.
That is what I hope that the United States learns from having a President who has been raised in a multiracial community. Barack Obama will bring a diverse perspective to the White House... he brings his white mother and grandparents, his african father and his father's family, his asian stepfather as well as Michelle's african-american family to the table. His upbringing has shaped him, and will make him a better man to address issues dealing with all the parts of the United States.
Happy is an understatement... I am ECSTATIC and not for any political reasons this time!!

| Apparently, this topic will not rest so I'll go ahead and put in my two cents' worth: the new President is not my favorite person. I abhor his politics and ideology, but being a mixed-race person myself, am happy enough that people in the United States of America can look past a person's skin color to the content of their character.
That said, the subject of race just will not die. Beyond the fact he's racially mixed, who cares about anything other than how he does the job? The fact he's mixed is not the reason why people voted for him and if it is, then there is indeed the myth of the rational voter. That's what a color-blind world should be all about--regardless of his race, the President of one of the most racially diverse country in the world should "bring a diverse perspective to the White House."
I certainly wish the new President the best, as I would any new President, regardless of race and I do this because I'm a patriot; I do this because I want whoever is in the White House to be successful at that job. While I don't believe Obama's got the experience, acumen, guts and political philosophy required for the job, that's an opinion and simply that. 52% of the population didn't think so and in a Democratic Republic, their voice carries the force of law, and one that I respect (the law, not necessarily the people :-)
The surest judge of all people is History and let's hope Obama is judged favorably.
