"As some of you are
attending IT Forum in Barcelona, I want to make sure those of you who are not
get the latest updates. At IT Forum,
Microsoft will announce broad support for 64 bit across many of its product
lines. As part of that announcement we will be announcing that Exchange 12 will
be 64 bit only.  This is a significant decision for us and it is one that
we did not make lightly. Many of you and your customers may have questions about
why Exchange 12 will be 64 bit only and the mail below provides some background
on the factors that lead to this decision and also the benefits from 64 bit that
we are seeing in our early dog food & TAP
deployments."

Wow. I don't recall Muglia making that statement at the
summit, I think he would have been beaten up pretty bad....

"Muglia made several product announcements during his
keynote address.

As part of its commitment to 64-bit computing, Microsoft
has been delivering products that are optimized for 64-bit, including the newly
released SQL Server„¢ 2005, Visual Studio® 2005 and Virtual Server
2005 R2. To help customers take full advantage of the power of 64-bit
computing, products including Microsoft® Exchange Server 12,
Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003, Windows Server„¢ Longhorn Small Business
Server, and Microsoft™s infrastructure solution for midsize businesses,
code-named Centro, will be exclusively 64-bit and
optimized for x64 hardware. In a future update release to Microsoft™s
upcoming Windows Server Longhorn operating system, code-named Windows Server
Longhorn R2, customers will see the complete transition to 64-bit-only
hardware, while still benefiting from 32-bit and 64-bit application
compatibility. For the highest-scale application and database workloads, Windows
Server on 64-bit Itanium-based systems will continue to be the premier choice
for customers for years to come."

The LH SBS package is pretty funny too... Imagine going
into all of those small companies and telling them they don't have a choice but
to buy a new server when they want to get the new security enhancements.

I hope MS decides to support K3 and Exchange K3 for some
time. Though I am already seeing a huge reduced emphasis and making K3 work
right now.

Any good non-GNU message/collaboration apps out there?
Something with maybe a BSD license?

Not to mention beta testing the SBS and Centro platforms is going to be
fun.  :-)

Actually there were/are hints on 64 bit only that was said before the
summit.  If you look at the SBS FAQ public page the discussion is there.

Actually not as insane as you think.  By the time LH comes out they
will probably need new hardware.

Neither do I. We just put in a 400K dollar Exchange 2003 environment like
18 months ago. I don™t think the client is going to be thrilled to hear
that was all a waste as it will only run one version of Exchange.

What if someone is running 32 bit on a 64 bit? Still not allow an inplace?

Personally I hate upgrades, won't do them except in the absolute this is
required case (which the only required case is the PDC of an NT4 domain to
retain the domain info). The fact that I hate them doesn't prevent others
from still wanting to do it. :)

Realistically figure Longhorn in 2007. Companies that lease
hardware are usually on a 3-year cycle so people leasing now already better be
getting x64 or very close to it. I doubt most are as I don't believe the
acceptance is anywhere as deep as MS seems to imply in that release, heck I
still see W2K and E2K on old old hardware on a regular basis. Actually more
regularly than I see E2K3 and K3.

As for folks that buy the hardware, they keep it until it
falls over dead and can't be repaired.

Obviously the SBS upgrade is required due to the Exchange
decision.

I realize we're a bit off-topic, but...

I disagree with this being a mistake. A lot of the problems with Exchange
(I'll limit the discussion to this area, joe ;) centered around memory
addressing. It wasn't until Windows 2003 SP1 that they reversed the
recommendation to use PAE vs. not. When clustering, memory was always a
limiting factor. 64bit price differential doesn't seem to be terribly huge,
so I'm not sure what the objection is other than it may slow down adoption
for those that purchased new-ish 32bit systems and don't want to upgrade the
hardware yet. To that, I would say that hardware is likely the least of your
costs in this equation. In the smallest of shops, that may be closer to
equal in terms of costs. As you scale up and add features, hardware is
almost always the cheapest resource in the equation.
Can you expand into why you think 64bit only would be a problem? I'd like
to at least understand this a bit better. If you need to, feel free to drop
the note off-line so we don't drift too far OT.

It was made in the Exchange product team meetings with the Exchange

I can assure you, our reaction was not positive. I think it is a serious
mistake.

How long before you expect to upgrade? And how does that compare with the
hardware lifecycle?
If you find a way to future proof anything in this business, please let the
rest of us know. :)
As for Joe's question: are there other packages available? Yep. But as
with anything it depends on what you want to accomplish and your tolerance
for changes. One option might be the open source version of
http://www.zimbra.com/products/index.html which implements what looks to be
a popular new path - AJAX.
There are other open source projects out there as well, but sometimes you
really do get what you pay for.

Neither do I. We just put in a 400K dollar Exchange 2003 environment like

was all a waste as it will only run one version of Exchange.

And for us 'let's wait for SP1" folks a year after that.

It will be about 2008 for critical mass...given my hardware was bought
in 2004... I'll be due for new toy server stuff by that time.  ;-)

At last year's (2004's) MVP Summit the key "feedback theme" we Exchange MVPs
were asked was why customers were so slow to adopt Exchange 2003. The 75GB
store limit with Exchange 2003 SP2 is, I believe, a key result of that
feedback--Standard Edition customers were slow to upgrade because they
didn't get anything much out of it, and now they get a big something. Upon
hearing of the 64-bit-only idea (we were told that not that it was a done
deal, just highly likely) I stressed not that there was a lack of technical
merit, but how it was likely going to be a poor business decision. I
believe this move to be one release too early. It will just be another
barrier, whether real or perceived, for customers to upgrade.

I kinda agree with Al... Exchange 12 is still what, 18 months or so out?
How many people are going to adopt it the day it's released? My guess
is that the companies who do are typically the more IT-aggressive, and
64bit will not be such an obstacle to them. SBS aside (I'll get to that
in a minute), a lot of orgs devote their best hardware to Exchange
because it takes up so much resource. So I don't think it's a huge
stretch to imagine a company who wants to upgrade to E12, looks at their
current server, and takes the servers they have scheduled to buy for LCM
of something else and then puts E12 on those, and then uses the
relinquished but still fairly new hardware to swap out the other
LCM-ready hardware. If, that is, they really want to go to E12. My
opinion, of course, but I know that on the desktop side, it's already
getting difficult to buy x32 anymore.

In light of that, as far as SBS goes... doesn't SBS run on desktop
hardware anyway, which will certainly be 64bit by then? (ducking rocks
from Susan) :)

I realize we're a bit off-topic, but...

I disagree with this being a mistake. A lot of the problems with
Exchange
(I'll limit the discussion to this area, joe ;) centered around memory
addressing. It wasn't until Windows 2003 SP1 that they reversed the
recommendation to use PAE vs. not. When clustering, memory was always a

limiting factor. 64bit price differential doesn't seem to be terribly
huge,
so I'm not sure what the objection is other than it may slow down
adoption
for those that purchased new-ish 32bit systems and don't want to upgrade
the
hardware yet. To that, I would say that hardware is likely the least of
your
costs in this equation. In the smallest of shops, that may be closer to

equal in terms of costs. As you scale up and add features, hardware is
almost always the cheapest resource in the equation.

Can you expand into why you think 64bit only would be a problem? I'd
like
to at least understand this a bit better. If you need to, feel free to
drop
the note off-line so we don't drift too far OT.

:-P

Actually assuming the STUPID blog site stays up I was going to blog
about what we are doing now is future proofing the hardware and specing
servers that can do 32 now, 64 later.
In my own case... by the time I'm ready to migrate in the office....
that's probably an eta date of 2008 and that's about on target for when
I'll be due for server upgrade anyway.
Why do I want E12? Monad. Patching ...man do I hate Exchange patches
and service packs. Exchange is truly the drag on the SBS box these days.

Wow. I don't recall Muglia making that statement at the summit, I think
he would have been beaten up pretty bad....
"Muglia made several product announcements during his keynote address.

As part of its commitment to 64-bit computing, Microsoft has been
delivering products that are optimized for 64-bit, including the newly
released SQL Server(tm) 2005, Visual Studio(r) 2005 and Virtual Server
2005 R2. To help customers take full advantage of the power of 64-bit
computing, products including Microsoft(r) Exchange Server "12,"

Windows

Compute Cluster Server 2003, Windows Server(tm) "Longhorn" Small
Business Server, and Microsoft's infrastructure solution for midsize
businesses, code-named "Centro," will be exclusively 64-bit and
optimized for x64 hardware. In a future update release to Microsoft's
upcoming Windows Server "Longhorn" operating system, code-named Windows
Server "Longhorn" R2, customers will see the complete transition to
64-bit-only hardware, while still benefiting from 32-bit and 64-bit
application compatibility. For the highest-scale application and
database workloads, Windows Server on 64-bit Itanium-based systems will
continue to be the premier choice for customers for years to come."

The LH SBS package is pretty funny too... Imagine going into all of
those small companies and telling them they don't have a choice but to
buy a new server when they want to get the new security enhancements.

I hope MS decides to support K3 and Exchange K3 for some time. Though I
am already seeing a huge reduced emphasis and making K3 work right now.

Any good non-GNU message/collaboration apps out there? Something with
maybe a BSD license?

Thanks Ed. That makes sense.

Just to take it a bit further, this is a valid decision if the majority of
the target audience will be purchasing new hardware and the new hardware
choices are predominantly 64bit. May also be worth the financial decision
if the new product provides additional stability and thereby reduces the
support burden on MS assuming that enough people adopt.
Would that be correctly putting this into perspective? Or am I still missing
something?

At last year's (2004's) MVP Summit the key "feedback theme" we Exchange
MVPs

were asked was why customers were so slow to adopt Exchange 2003. The 75GB
store limit with Exchange 2003 SP2 is, I believe, a key result of that
feedback--Standard Edition customers were slow to upgrade because they
didn't get anything much out of it, and now they get a big something. Upon
hearing of the 64-bit-only idea (we were told that not that it was a done
deal, just highly likely) I stressed not that there was a lack of technical
merit, but how it was likely going to be a poor business decision. I
believe this move to be one release too early. It will just be another
barrier, whether real or perceived, for customers to upgrade.

heck I still see W2K and E2K on old old hardware on a regular basis.
Actually more regularly than I see E2K3 and K3.

OK - but Longhorn in its current time frame which I think You are
talking about 2007 release will still support 32-bit architecture. This
press release states that Longhorn R2 will be the version which will be
64-bit only. I don't know what is a time frame for LH R2 - maybe we will
get rid of 32-bit boxes as aservers till then for other reasons (64-bit
may become cheaper then 32-bit)

I can't disagree with any of that. I think that maybe 75% of my
apprehension is strictly due to perception.

One exception to your analysis, however, is with large bureaucratic
organizations who ponder and test things over long cycles; those may delay
implenting 64-bit Exchange because they can't deploy 64-bit Windows. But
such organizations would probably take forever to make ANY upgrade, so
perhaps that's a moot case.

Or am I still missing
something?
