Group,

Sorry for sending an Exchange question to an AD group, but I really need
an answer to this quick.

Does anyone know how to find a specific string or text in email? I know
that exmerge can do subjects and system manager can track a message by
sender or receiver.. But, I need to know how to find specific text in an
email.

Thanks

If you are thinking of finding them as they arrive or as they are being sent,
eventsink is the way to go. I don't know how to write one that will go
through messages already in the store and look for the keyword. But, writing
one that looks for the keyword as the message is coming in or leaving should
do the trick.

The anti-virus server application (Exchange aware) is a great way to do
that.

Do you have one?

The idea I was going after is to specify the content you're after as a target. Basically, the same as when the new spam and viruses come out and you specify that certain content is to be cleaned.

I'm not familiar with Antigen, but a quick look at the websites makes it look like the anti-spam is an extra product. :(

Take a look at the documentation though. I know that the avapi allows them access to the messages in the store. It's a matter of if they expose that in the product you have. Basically, you'll want to specify and then have it report only.

There might be a utility floating around to report such a thing via the same api, but I haven't seen one to date.

Another option is to use sharepoint to index the messages. That's not something I prefer to do, but those are two options I've seen used successfully in the past.

I agree with Deji that a sink is one way to do this at a border, but you'd just be using the avapi if you did and may as well purchase a third-party for the cost effectiveness and virus signatures.

Two ways into the store for that type of work would be the avapi and indexing. Of the two, avapi is more likely in use :)

I don't have the answer to this other than writing a sink or something that
reads every message of every mailbox, neither of which I would consider
trivial, but....

I find this statement to be humorous "Sorry for sending an Exchange question
to an AD group, but I really need an answer to this quick.".

Findstr /S /I "string" \\.\backofficestorage\\mbx

It'll be slow. And it requires access to every mailbox. But it'll work.
