| Hello,
We currently have 10 Domain controllers running Win2k8 STD x64 on 5 different sites. A child domain was requested for a particular group. They have purchased Windows 2k8 STD R2 x64 for the child domain controllers. Should I be concerned with any compatibility issues with the different versions of OS if the parent domain is not R2 ? Any input is greatly appreciated.
Regards, Julio

| The child domain can not be of an higher functional level than that of its parent domain (forest). You would have to prep the forest with R2 updates before you introduce an 08 R2 DC (as child domain's first DC).
However, I would diligently question the technical requirements of additional domain for that particular group within the same company.

| You need to upgrade your schema prior to promoting that 2008 R2 server to a domain controller

| That's incorrect.

* You cannot set the domain functional level to a value that is lower than the forest functional level, but you can set it to a value that is equal to or higher than the forest functional level.

| There is a compatibility issue with OCS and Windows 2008 R2 AD. Just check that before you apply that forest prep.

| We just tested this last week. What we discovered was that when you perform the W2K8 R2 *domain prep, *this will knock out OCS 2k7 R2's domain prep. The domains that you have prepped for W2K8 R2 will appear unprepped for OCS. All OCS 2k7 R2 features worked, but if you went to add another OCS server to your environment, you won't be able to do that until you rerun the OCS domain prep in those domains.
We didn't see any conflict when just running the forest prep for W2K8 R2, however.
I also know from a PSS case we opened, that OCS R2 group chat doesn't work properly if the OCS server is trying to talk to a W2K8 R2 GC. I know Microsoft was supposed to have released a hotfix for OCS that corrected this back in April, but I'm not sure if they actually released it. We haven't gotten so far as promoting the first W2K8 DC yet in our environment.
Thanks, Matt

| You may want to do some testing on this--my testing showed that the W2K8 R2 forest prep, this had no ill effect on group chat. When we did the W2K8 R2 domain prep, this knocked out OCS's domain prep, but group chat continued to function. I haven't gone this far yet, but I believe OCS group chat will only truly break if you try to force it to talk to a W2K8 R2 DC. That is, unless you apply the group chat hot fix in advance.
Thanks, Matt
