Hello,

We are running AD on Windows Server 2008 x64 STD in Windows 2000
functional mode after the upgrade last year. Our CA still is Windows
2000 physical server and I have been tasked with upgrading it to a
Virtual Machine. Microsoft suggest upgrading the CA server to Windows
2003 then build a new server and proceeding with a move of CA
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298138). I am hesitant to upgrade a
physical server so I was wondering if you had any suggestions on getting
a new CA (Maybe a Win2k8 server). I am leaning towards converting the
PC to a VM and following the upgrade procedures.

Any thoughts, suggestions or gotchas ? Really appreciated.

Julio

We have a CA as a VM. We did a p2v and it went fine. You can export the ca details, bring up a new box, flatten the old, name the new the same as the old and reimport the settings, etc... Have done this as well, I'm not an expert on CA though.

Thanks

Paul

I'd go for the P2V route - but use the Microsoft Migration tools - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd365353(WS.10).aspx should do it for you.

Hope the Server's not doing too much in terms of other roles though :-)
