Earlier this week, I was browsing through the new schema elements added via the ws2008r2 schema, and noticed the msTSEndpointType attribute, which has a description of:
This attribute defines if the machine is a physical machine or a virtual machine.

Doesn't look like documentation or anything else on the web has much explanation for this attribute, but it looks like maybe it'd be useful in the future for what you're asking. But like so many other attributes in AD, it's hard to tell what's intended here. :)

I usually ask the machine for its motherboard manufacturer. If it's "Microsoft" or "VMWare", it's virtual
