Hi,

I am trying to uninstall some exchange servers (2K/2K3) who are having some duplicate mailboxes / junk mailboxes. Junk mailboxes are not accessible to move/cut down into pst with Exmerge. Duplicate mailboxes doesn't have their own entity so can't delete them. Exmerge is showing these duplicate mailboxes. Kindly let me know how can I force remove these mailbox store without move/delete these unnecessary mailboxes. How can I delete these duplicate mailboxes. Strange thing is in one mailbox, mails are getting delivered in both mailbox (Original & duplicate).

Hi Dhiraj,

Are you able to see those mailboxes in ESM? If you right click what are all
the options you get?

I believe you need to run the cleanup command first.. (right click the store select cleanup). Then some mailboxes will be shown disconnected.. and then you can clean them up. Else, there is still an active account to the mailbox, you need to delete the account prior to be able to cleanup the mailbox.

I agree with you, Roelf, Now my problem is, it's showing some duplicate mailboxes which I can't remove bcoz I can't see them in ADUC. kindly let me know how to delete these junk duplicate mailbox entries. it seems that some users are mapped with two mailboxes. one is the original mailbox & second, a junk mailbox. now how can I search/delete this junk mailboxes. In ESM Purge option is not enabled. I have tried to search all mailboxes on that server from ADUC --> Exchange Home Server but it's not showing correct details. As per Exchange 2000 M Drive, still 2-3 dummy (having dummy names, not seems system mailboxes) mailboxes are there. Now which command can show me the exact list of mailboxes on that server.

Do these mailboxes show up in the management console? Have you done a filtered search in the shell for all mailboxes on that specific server.

IIRC the powershell script will be something like this:

Get-mailbox | where-object {$_.Servername -eq "Legacyserver"}

This will return all mailboxes that are hosted, according to AD, on the server you name. You could then pipe this into remove-mailbox to purge them.

On Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 mailboxes aren't actually created until they are logged into for the 1st time with a MAPI client or an e-mail is sent to them.

What I've had happen to me is that these mailboxes land up as ghosts. You can't see them in the console but system refuses to uninstall the server or database because it says that there are still mailboxes on the db.

Hope this assists.

If SERVER is the server, then something like

dsquery * forestroot -filter
"(|(homeMDB=*cn=SERVER*)(msExchHomeServerName=*cn=SERVER*))"

Should work. But it's an expensive query. So I wouldn't like run it every 5
seconds or anything.
