When deploying AD and Windows [both workstations & terminal servers],
there's a significant amount of variation that can occur w/respect to how
home directories and profiles can be configured. Specifically, there's the
issue of using roaming profiles vs. local profiles vs. mandatory profiles,
as well as "MY Documents" folder redirection and/or a mapped network drive
letter that ends up targeting a home directory on the network. Frequently,
with T.S. set up in application server mode, it's not uncommon to use a
mandatory profile in the T.S. environment and then either a roaming or local
profile for workstation logons, although a T.S. app server set up for
general remote access instead of dedicated application service would be a
case where you might want to use a roaming profile during a T.S. session.
I'm curious to know what various administrators have implemented in their AD
& Windows deployments in terms of what types of profiles they're using in
both workstation & T.S. logons and whether they use a home directory
connected to a home drive or if they do the "My Documents" redirection to a
UNC path that targets the user's home directory. If roaming profiles are in
use, I'd also like to know if you're also using a separate home directory,
too, such that 2 different storage locations need to be managed on the
network for each user.
Also, any links to "best practices" whitepapers or discussions on the
subject would be welcome, too.
