| Hello All, We have got somewhere around 70,000+ DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, NS, SRV) in our forest.
In windows 2008 DNS management console, when I open this domain Zone, it will load all 70,000+ records with in a minute where as in windows 2008 R2 DCs it takes more than 5 minutes to load.
Does anyone experienced this behavior?
Regards,
Jit

| Hi Jit,
After sending this to the list 3 times I think I better respond with some info.
70,000 records is a ridiculous amount. Are they all real, or are a certain percentage stale? Have you got scavenging enabled?
Anyway, these two hotfixes are a requirement for any large AD/DNS based on Windows 2008 R2:
KB983534: Performance of the DNS Server service keeps decreasing under a heavy load situation in Windows Server 2008 R2
KB2548145: The size of the Active Directory increases rapidly on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controller that hosts the DNS Server role
Cheers,
Jeremy.

| 70 k does not sound like that much. If we were using ADDNS, I am sure it would be more than that. I am told by some MS folks that there are much larger orgs. Using ADDNS without the trouble. Is the issue with the DNS console or with DNS itself.
I do remember having a similar issue with DNS console and I believe there was a hotfix that addressed the issue.
Are you using the dns mmc or server manager to view the zones. That might help isolate the issue. Server manager uses ports 5985 and 5986 and 9389 for AD web services.
May be worth a try to use them both and see if there is a difference.

| I've got ~60K in the main production zone and Windows 2003 MMC displays the zone records in just over a minute, roughly same time as using RSAD on W7.
Jithendra the OT didn't clearly state whether he's accessing same DNS server (indicating MMC issue) or different servers running W2K8 and R2, locally or over network. Those are big factors.

Slav

| Yes it’s an AD integrated DNS server, all are active records (and Scavenging is also enabled)
Coming back to the issue, this happens in any windows 2008R2 domain controller (logged-in locally) or in my windows 7 client (which I have a local DC in the site) takes more time....
However in windows 2008 DCs it loads all 70K records with in 70 to 80 seconds.
Does loading number of records /sec veries between windows 2008 and windows 2008R2 DNS servers? or should we need to tweak any registry value ?
I would need to check the hotfix as Jeremy indicated.
Regards,
Jit
