| Hi all,
Apologies if discussed previously - feel free to point me to an old ActiveDir thread :-)
We are researching the feasibility of storing employee photos in AD.
Currently, these photos are stored in a staff directory and are only visible at the request of the employee.
Assuming we decide to make these photos available via AD, I have several questions:
1. Can Outlook / OCS display a photo if located outside AD/SYSVOL? i.e. can these apps refer to a photo repository outside of the domain/forest via a UNC/URL?
2. If the response to 1. is 'no' then must SYSVOL be used to house the photo files? Or can any Windows file path be specified?
3. Typically, how much space will each photo consume, based upon experience of those who have ventured this far?
4. Typically, how much network traffic is generated as a result of photo storage? Will Outlook / OCS cache photos when retrieved or will these apps retrieve the photo file every time the employee is lookup up?
Any other experiences that anyone cares to share would be invaluable.
Many thanks, neil

| Hey Neil. It has been discussed here before. I'm not going to bother trying to search for it, as basically I have never got the hang of the activedir search. From memory I think the consensus was it wasn't worth bloating the DIT with the photos.
I may be wrong but I was under the impression that the only way for you to give Outlook access to a centralised extended contact was to integrate with Sharepoint. It would also seem to make more sense from a business process point of view. Much better to allow HR and\or staff to post their photos to Sharepoint than have your SAs trimming photos and loading them into AD.

| Since the photos are relatively small, space and bandwidth are not major concerns. The thing that is a concern, and that kept us from promoting the use of pictures in AD, is the prospect of turning your directory into a corporate version of HotOrNot.com. Unless your coworkers are considerably better behaved than mine ever were, you're going to end up with people either lusting after or laughing at the photo of the new receptionist in building 7.
Technically storing the photos in AD and having them appear in Outlook address book details is simple and straightforward. Given the possibility of liability I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of doing this to get the written approval of their company's head of HR and chief lawyer before moving forward.

| It's already productized
Outlook 14 and OWA14 are using thumbnailPhoto attribute in AD to display "contact cards". I am not sure what is populating this attribute in MS IT, I think it's ILM pulling it from the HR database with badge pictures, and there's also a way to upload a different picture through Sharepoint. One thing that Exchange14 schema prep changes is marking this attribute for GC replication.

Hi all,
Apologies if discussed previously - feel free to point me to an old ActiveDir thread
Many thanks,
neil

| Many thanks to all. Some interesting comments J
The HR / compliance discussions have started - I'm interested in the feasibility conceptually and technically.
Several ppl suggest this is 'technically simple' but is that really the case without the use of the latest versions of MOSS and Exchange/Outlook??
I'd still like to hear from anyone who has actually trodden this path and can share with me any gotchas etc J
Thanks,
neil

| One concern I always have with storing a (relatively) large value on a user record, other than replication, is that naively-implemented LDAP client applications may not properly restrict their requested attribute set during search, causing a significant increase in network traffic to the DSA.

| It's more fun to grab the photos and use them with some morphing software. Seeing the entire sales team turn into monkeys is quite a draw card.
