Hi Guys,

Sorry if this is too far off topic, but I know there are a lot of great minds and Exchange gurus here :) I implemented Exchange 2007 SP2 on Server 2008 about 2 months ago (was SP1 initially). With SP2, I have started using the Windows Backup functionality to provide a little bit of backup. Currently, it backs up my C drive (just OS), D drive (Exchange binaries) and my E and F which have the Transaction Logs and Databases respectively. Here is the syntax for the backup -

wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:\\server\backups\exchange -include:C:,D:,E:,F: -allcritical -vssfull -quiet

I should note that Exchange is running on VMs from within ESX 4.0 (vSphere). On Friday, we had a file system issue and pretty much lost a lot of our VMs (I know, our backup scheme is being improved upon). I was able to boot to a Windows Server 2008 DVD and restore from the most recent backup, at least the C drive. Everything else was on the SAN so for the most part, no major issues after getting the databases clear from dirty shutdown and repaired.

The problem is, however, I can't seem to run a backup completely anymore. The data backs up fine, but the "application" piece, Exchange, won't go through the backup because the consistency check fails. Here is what the event viewer says, which is similar to the CMD prompt window -

Consistency check for component 'ec6576dd-d237-4bf0-9dc6-c3083c76b9d2'\'Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\EXCHANGE-VM01' failed. Application 'Exchange' will not be avaliable in the backup done at time '11/9/2009 5:59:52 PM'

Unfortunately I can't find much online around the information for that component, or how to troubleshoot it. I also had similar event log errors referencing the ConvertStringtoSid problems and tried fixes from these two links:

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/32787256/vss-error-on-the-windows.aspx
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverfiles/thread/7b52f7c1-a783-409e-9af3-da64567676df

Neither helped me resolve the issue. I'm working on a more robust backup solution but like other companies, money is tight for us and I have to do the best I can with what's available. Any help on how I can decode the error message is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried ISInteg yet? Looks like something in the DB has become
inconsistent; I'd run through some tests on it...

Hi Charlie,

During my repair I had to do eseutil /p, then /d then I did run ISInteg - but if memory serves, I think I only had to two that on two of the three db's. I'll give that another pass on all of them and see what happens.

I'll share my results when I have them - thanks.

Derek
