Hey Guys,

We are using roaming profiles and currently I am setting up a VPN so that
our laptop users can work from home however I am struggling to find a way
(which I thought would be perfectly achievable via Group Policy) to force a
user to use a local profile so that I can assign said policy to all laptop
users so they aren't syncing their profile over the VPN.

We are running a Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition x64 DC with all WinXP Pro
SP3 clients.

Thank you for your time;

Regards,
James ;)

Hi James

The setting you are looking for is under Computer Configuration >
Admin Templates > System > User Profiles > Only Allow local user
profiles

Hopefully you have all your laptops in a single OU, or separate from
your desktops, so you can just enable this for all your laptops
without affecting the roaming profiles on your desktops. We use it
for servers in our environment as we don't want admins with roaming
profiles having the roaming profile loading on the server

Hope this helps
M

James-
Normally roaming profiles don't download or upload except at logon and logoff, which assumes your VPN is available during these times? Is this the case? If so, then have you looked at tweaking the per-computer Admin Template settings that control things like slow link for profile upload? In the past, I've used that to tell Windows to just not even try to upload or download the profile is a certain link speed is detected. Its not precise but may help here.

Darren
