Note how they always use joe as an example object :)

Just in case you wonder: the DN is actually not what's stored in the linked attributes at the database level. Instead just the DNT - the DistinuishedName tag - is stored, which is basically a reference to the actual DN of an object. So renames or moves of an object (which change the DN) won't have any impact on your links...

Excellent - that example is pretty much what will be happening.

Thank you!

The directory will automatically handle populating the backlink attribute. No need to worry about that...

Subject: [ActiveDir] Attribute Updating (of attributes with forward/back links)

I've been asked to update the 'managedby' field on 10's of thousands of workstations with the users names (SAMID's, which I'll convert to distinguishedname "DN") of the respective users.

In poking around (I maybe looking at this wrong) I see that the 'managedby' attribute has a "linkID" of 72 - and the backlink ID is 73: "managed objects"

If I extract the users DN and populate that into the 'managedby' attribute of the workstation Ώ] do I also need to update the user's corresponding object and update the 'managed objects' attribute with the DN of the computer object?

If not, I'm not going to cause some massive breakage/referential integrity issue - or does AD handle those links itself, somehow?

Thanks in advance!

Ώ] via a script - not sure which one yet - something like DSMOD or from within powershell
