Hi All,   I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I am working for a customer which wants to deploy W2K16 Domain Controllers. They still have 2003 DC’s. Are there any restraints having a temporary situation with W2K3 and W2K16 DC’s existing at the same time?

I presume that the same rules apply as with Server 2012 R2. Any insights are more than welcome!

My initial thoughts were around SYSVOL replication using FRS as this was Deprecated in 2012.

But I just found this.

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/filecab/2014/06/25/the-end-is-nigh-for-frs/

Update 10/10/2016

We did

not

remove FRS from Windows Server 2016. But we do plan to remove it sometime after Windows Server 2016[SHIPS] and with the new servicing models this might not be that long.

Migrate to DFSR immediately.

So you may still be able to go directly to 2016 form 2003 – but it is not a scenario that I have tested.

If not mistaken any new domain will use dfsr for sysvol with w2k13 and higher. In existing domains it will still support ntfrs if still used
Dfl/ffl wise you are also fine
You should get rid of ntfrs as soon as possible

Thanks guys, I will be deploying 2016 DC’s in an “Integration” environment and will come back to you asap with my findings (only 2008 DC’s in that environment, but I might add

a 2003 DC if the DFL let’s me J).
