Hello Techies,
I have a new assignment coming for migrating file servers from Novell Netware to Microsoft Active Directory. I would like to have experts advice here to what tool to be used for the same, and approaches etc., It would be great if someone provides any documentation if you have it handy.
ThanksGK Sankar+91-9962550811

God I haven't seen Novell for over 15 years now. Novell 4 & 5 were the forerunners of AD today. I suppose it was the combination of Microsofts developing Active directory (Not copying novell at all obviously ) and ruthless marketing that eventually blew Novell with that.Sorry, apart from nostalgic reminiscing I have nothing to help with on this one.

You don’t say what aspects of Novel or even what version, what the scope is, what the size of the project is, so just authentication? file shares? How many servers? Is there a GroupWise Migration involved? If file shares are involved it can be fun, especially in a complex environment as Network permissions don’t migrate in the same way. In Active Directory an administrator can always take ownership of any folder and over write the permissions. This isn’t possible in netware. Dave

Check out Migration Manager from Quest. We’ve used it for migrating from one AD to another, but I believe you can use it for Novell.

We did our last one about three or four years ago.

We used ForensiT’s Profile Migration Wizard to automate the entire migration. It worked like a charm.

Novel was the latest the TO environment was a new Server 2012 R2 setup running on Hyper-V.

The Quest tools are what I used the handful of times I’ve done this.

Thanks,
