Hi all

I have a development environment which has 2 x W2K3 R2 DC's however one of them is running Exchange 2007.

I realise it's not recommended which is why I'm trying to change this.

I want to upgrade this environment to Windows 2008 R2.

* My plan is bring up a new Windows 2008 R2 DC
* transfer FSMO roles
* demote the existing W2K3 R2 DC
* promote a replacement 2008 R2 DC
* demote the remaining W2K3 R2 DC with Exchange 2007 so it becomes a member server.
* raise forest/domain functional levels

Is there anything I should consider when demoting the Exchange server from a DC to member server? Should this work without problems?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken it is not supported to demote a DC while exchange is
sitting on top of it

Cheers,

Hi,

What you must do is: Add another Exchange server to your network move the mailboxes over and deinstall exchange on the DC. Then do a dcpromo /demote reinstall exchange move mailboxes over again.

Else you will be in trouble I believe..

Correct. I have had this done by clients, and I can assure you, it does break things.

Exchange must be moved while the server is still a DC. Then it can be demoted.
