what service is responsible for the active directory database replication?

NTDS, same service that loads the database and provides LDAP interface.
And no, it’s not DFSr or FRS before that, which are for Sysvol only.

Note that AD doesn’t replicate the database, i.e. the .DIT files. It replicates the data. So each domain controller in a domain

will have a different set of files, but (mostly) the same directory objects.

RPC is the service that actually replicates the AD database to the replication partners.

Gil's point is absolutely correct in that it does not replicate the database per se, just the changes.  Thanks for the reminder!

And RPC isn’t “the service that replicates AD” any more than TCP is.  It’s much more accurate to say that AD replicates itself, using RPC as a transport. ex-DonH
